Conventions of a opening sequence

conventions Film Opening:
Has got to hook the audience, for them to want to watch it until the end

Familiarizes the viewer with setting, uses establishing shot to open up the first scene in the opening.
Slower paced than the trailer as it wants to keep the suspense and not reveal the main plot of the film. so by going at a slower pace it grasps the audience attention and they want to watch on to see the action that they sore in the trailer.
Uses narrative- in some cases this is good if it is a very ambiguous story line narrative helps the audience understand what's going on.
Titles, they are effective at the beginning of an opening as it lengths the opening and certain titles relate to the thriller genera or film.

Establish a certain mood or tone, to the film, because by creating a atmosphere it grasps the audiences attention and draws them into watching the whole film.

has to have a sound track, if the sound track relates to the genera thriller it pays of as they are very effective in making an atmosphere and also to length the film to leave audience in suspense.

Viewers need to feel curious/engaged and have questions they want answered to view more.

Conventions of my Chosen Genre

  • Simple font titles in opening which short and animated titles, this is effective as animated titles you can make as effective as you want and they can sometimes make the audience get ready for the film as some titles are quite scary and ambiguous.

Thriller

  • Creepy, mysterious and ambiguous locations and scenes. this is used a lot in thrillers as they do not give away a lot till the end and like to keep the audience in suspense waiting and carry on watching to find out.

  • Quick cuts and not so many slow effects between shots. the quick cuts are used along side the music and quick cuts and music create action in the film which make the audience have a reaction to it. which again is a good element of a thriller as it makes them want to carry on watching.

  • Dark areas blunt lighting colours used. Used all the time as locations and people are not given away straight away and main characters are hidden until the end or a point or scene of climax.

  • Lots of facial close ups and body close ups.normality a number 2 of the film so always leaves you at a cliff hanger. it show the tension of what may be going on in the film.
  • Steady music leading up to point of action of a tense moment to reveal a dilemma or a situation in the film. this can also be effective in the film as a a high point of tension the music can rise and dramatically go loud so make the audience have a reaction to what is going on.

Trailer to The Strangers

Cinematography:
Perfect shots and all shots centred and the construction of the shots create a good mise-en-scene and a sense of a happy beginning.
the trailer grabs the audience attention by how the camera shots become uneven and doesn't follow the golden rule of constructing camera shots, by doing this the effect on the audience is that it creates tension within the situation that is going on in the trailer and intrigues them to watch the film.
furthermore the trailer has tilt/fast shots which gives a sense of pace of adrenaline and panic within the trailer, the shots show in this adrenalin build up were not only the main focus of the audiences attention but also the main events that occur in the film.

Editing:
The editing within this trailer is used very effectively as the trailer uses it all the way through.
An example of this is that at the start/equilibrium of the trailer shows smooth fading effects from one clip to another to show a sense happiness and affection between the two main characters, however this all changes to grab the audience attention as the effect of the fade transition speeds up and slowly stops fading and just cuts to each clip. This shows that everything has sped up pace and relates back to the genre of the film, which is a thriller.
Finally titles are used in the middle trailer, to attract the audience to watch further.

Sound:
They have used the sound very effectively at the start as they have collaborated a minor key with a happy clip which conveys to the audience that what is happening on screen is happy however they know from the music that there is a sense of danger and future events that will take place.
the use of diagetic sound is used very creatively by using silent background noises and focuses on the breathing noise, which constructs a whole atmosphere to the audience, which drags their attention to what is happening, which is a main aspect of trailer construction.

mise en scene:
The overall look of the film is a slow but effective build up of tension as the film uses lots of quick shots with diagetic and non diagetic sound clips to build up suspense. for example a main scene in the trailer was when a face was shown behind the unknown character which is effective as it uses all elements at once, sound clip cuts and editing that finally builds up to the climax and start of the thriller bit in the film.

Triangle opening sequence

http://tubeplus.com/player/1685036/Triangle/

couldn't find opening so had to find link with film on it.

But within this opening sequence it has a really good effect on the audience as it starts of with a mystical opening as you do not yet know what characters there are and who they are within the film.

Cinematography:
Within the opening it shows shot's of characters but none which characteristics of them so it left me in suspense. The effect of doing this is it might show shots from the trailer which in the first place made you want to see the film, and then it gives you the information that these are man characters.
More so it uses a tilt shot as the first clip plays and it gives a sense of anxiety and as the audience its the opening that grabs you with the use of dramatic constructed shots.

Editing:
The editing in the opening is very well done as it shows title of who stars in it ext, but also uses the fade in and fade out effect to swap between titles and short shots of he film. This is very effective in an opening sequence as it grasps the audience attention and the effects also give them information to the opening. Importantly the title of the film is shown through an effect, it uses three effects combined it uses a fade for the titles that run of it and also uses a zoom and fade in effect for the main title of the film which is "triangle".

Sound:
The sound within the opening sequence uses both diagetic and non-diagetic sound. An example is where it uses music in played over the diagetic noise which firstly set's a scene of the opening and also gives mystery to the opening. Also the speech from the woman at the beginning had no scene to what the audience knows so is again a good aspect of opening sequences as it makes the audience want to watch and find out why, where, who, what and how.

Triangle Trailer

This is the trailer for the film Triangle. This trailer is very well constructed as it starts of it opens with a creeps scary soundtrack which straight away creates a horror thriller atmosphere and grabs the audience to adventure the film. even though the film opens with horror music it then tops it of with quick pictures and clips of the scenery and what is happening/story line of the film which is a main aspect of trailers.
lastly an aspects of trailers was used again which was titles and voice overs. these were used to inform the audience what the plot is and practically make them to watch the film.

Cinematography: In this trailer it uses mostly fast but scene setting shots. for example in the opening of the trailer it shows the scenery and the setting of the trailer and all happy perfect shots. it puts across to the audience the genera of film as the happy music stops and the perfect shots change and there is more diagetic sound of people's worried voices and shots of status looking down upon them. this attracts the the audience which is a main feature of a trailer to attract the audience.

Editing:
firstly the clips are very short so it doesn't give away to much of the plot and story line. Also to help the audience image with the film there are two aspects of editing firstly there are titles but with the titles there is a voice over in a deep voice which is very effective in a trailer. The last title is effective for the trailer as it shows the trailer as five star rated which again grabs audiences attention.

Sound:
The sound in this trailer is well composed as it starts off happy and as the dilemma is happening the music changes to fast racing music.

Opening to Eden Lake

This is the opening sequence of the film Eden Lake. Within this clip it shows at the beginning all the titles show with suspensory music which makes the audience anxiousness
and also grabs there attention and makes hem want to watch on.
also within the beginning sequence it shows very short fast snippits of what might happen in the film of events happening and people screaming in pain , which might relate to the film if you had not seen it before so again hooks the audience and creates an atmosphere.

Cinematography:
The cinematography in the opening of is very happy/ and vibrant ad they show lots of close ups of kids faces in a nursery and they show a character which shows up to be a main character. further more the camera shots mix in with the non diagetic music because even though all the shots are happy ones it gives a sense or scarce and creepyness as the shots that are composed are not perfect they are an angled shots which suggest a sence of uneasyness and a hidden dilema.

Editing:
The editing in this opening is that there are titles at the start it will do a title then a quick clip of the film then another title. they do this because they want to get the audience involved and keep them entertained for 2 hours at least.

Sound:
The sound in the opening is weird because it is all nice happy mise-en-scene but ad creepy music playing in the background and it to the audience gives a sense of events going down hill form this weird equilibrium.

Eden Lake trailer

This is the "Eden lake" trailer. In this trailer it gets right into the action and shows you straight away the scenery and the basic story line by using a voice over of what they are doing. Also within the trailer it shows you the main bits of what happens in the film and grabs your attention and makes you want to go and see the film. Further more it shows you all the main characters and what there like and through out the hole trailer even though it gives you all the good bits it doesn't give away what actually happens within the film so it leaves you mind at a cliff hanger. The main feature of it is that it shows all the clips shot and quick.

Cinematography:

Within the trailer there are lots of fast used shots to give across to the audience a sense of ambiguous setting and story also unclear events that happen in the film. The shots such as close ups on certain points in the film shows the most action and good points of the film and also by doing this it shows feelings of the characters in the film.

Editing:

The trailer includes lots of editing. Firstly it uses clear titles so that the audience can get a hint or a clue to what is happening in the film. Next on the video side of it, it used flashes and fades to swap between clips this makes the audience maybe jump and conveys a sense of thrill or that something is wrong, also when they use the flash effect it is red to give a sense of danger.

Sound:

The sound within the trailer is always at high intensity and through out the trailer it is always increasing. Also to finish the trailer the last thing they try and do is to leave the trailer at really immense intensity and then finish and put the title of the film, this make the audience want to find out what happens.

Se7en Trailer

There are a range of differences between Se7en's movie trailer and opening sequence, they both grab our attention as viewers. The main intention is to lead us into watching the film by using the main events in the film and to have through out the trailer high action and high adrenalin so that the audience is attracted to watch the actual film. The trailer shows the short clips in montage which helps us as an audience to gain a sense of what the film is about and the atmosphere which is created. The clips overlay each other which creates a jumpy effect a a sense of events about to occur. In comparison, the opening sequence establishes the mood a film. It is well composed as it mainly has close up shots which only let its viewers see a little amount within the frame. The opening sequence has a missionary soundtrack in the background which reinforces a sense on uncertainness as to what the characters plan is.

How i designed my profile.

To design my blog, I clicked on the icon "design" and from there there are such icons as template.
I chose a purple template that was the theme of my whole page and i also chose it because it stands out to the audience and easy to read writing in white or black
I also have put now three posts onto my wall and also added a video that i uploaded to youtube.
Also i selected a picture which was a logo of clothing that i like.
Lastly the style of the writing is very clear and very presentable.

How to insert a picture into my blog.

I inserted this picture to the blog so I can explain how to do it, you can do it various ways.
1) firstly you can go to the dashboard and it should say "new post".

Wallander

Wallander

My first image is of the title screen and it is a very effective way of portraying the title, because the opening scene we find out that the girl has stabbed someone, and this is obviously a crime, and the clever way the title is portrayed adds to the tension, as you can visually see the shape by the mans blade, and could represent the knife in the previous scene. The colours chosen for this picture suggest that his personality is much concealed as only half of his face is shown and it is in Blue. a reason why some of his face may be showing as it might suggest that he has a bad streak in him which could refer to the colors of yellow and black.

For my second image, I have chosen a close up image of the knife in the girls hand. The use of the blood all over her hand is very clever as it portrays even before we know what's happened, what she has done. However, we do not know whether she is the victim or the one perpetrator of the crime. The Mise en scene of this shot shows the costumes used in the film very well. We see from this shot that the girls is dressed in black, which hides her personality and maybe that there is something mysterious about her that we will later find out in the film. Taking into the consideration that the girl is in Jeans shows that maybe it was just an abnormal thing, and she isn't dressed especially appropriate for running away from a crime scene, this shows that maybe the girl isn't normally a bad person, and that it was just a one off.

My third image is of a tracking shot which is kind of used as an establishing shot to show the whereabouts of the area and where the crime has taken place. From this shot we can see that the area is very open and a crime would be easy to commit out on the hills as nobody is around, and nobody will be able to tell what is going on. Also if the man in the taxi who was stabbed was screaming nobody will be able to hear him, so the crime can continue and the criminals would be able to get away in plenty of time. The use of the lake or sea at the bottom of the picture shows that the area is meant to be peaceful and gentle; however this is contrasted by the sound of he ferocious winds, suggesting that it isn't an ordinary day.

My fourth image is of a perfect example of the rule of thirds. Here we can see the two girls on either side of the frame, and we can see the car tracks in between them and they veer off to one side, suggesting where the car came from. In between the girls is a very oddly shaped tree which suggests the odd goings on. The girl on the right is the one we see who drops the knife, and due to her red hair and her clothes she is wearing we can tell she is a very outgoing character and possibly very confident. From what we have seen of the girl on the left, we realise that maybe she is innocent in this as from her facial expression we see she is shocked and she is not dressed abnormally and so we can gather that she didn't commit the crime but she was merely just there.

My fifth image shows again a very nice example of the rule of thirds, with the man in the middle in between 2 police cars which are either side of him. Because he is in the middle we are able to tell how important he is, as he is right in the middle of the investigation. We can also tell how important he is by what he is wearing, for example, he is in his own clothes rather than in uniform, which suggests that he is high up in the ranks so people respect him more and he has more authority about his work place. The man's posture is very straight and high up which also shows he is important.

My sixth image again shows rule of thirds in a way, because on one side of the frame you have the drivers head, which looks like he is dead, on the right side of the frame you have his taxi license which helps the audience realise that he is a taxi driver, and that he was obviously driving those girls. In the centre of the picture we can see blood on the windscreen which is obviously the drivers as he is lying on the dashboard not moving. If you look closely you can see that a drop of blood is dripping down towards the girls head, which is maybe pointing to the culprit, which contradicts what they are wearing because from what we've seen the girl it is pointing to is the innocent looking one, and maybe the blood stain has an omniscient point of view and can tell it

kiss me deadly

Director- Robert Aldrich

Kiss me deadly

Genera-thriller

Opening sequence

The title of the film when and how does it appear on the screen?

The title is shown with in the beginning as there is an over the shoulder shot with lots of the title including the main title of the film, this shot is very effective as it creates an atmosphere and draws audience in to the film as it is an ambiguous title. It was shown with an effect rolling down the screen. It was a big bold white coloured “kiss me deadly” these are all good elements of a thriller opening as it drags on the titles and has a slow but effective opening to compose the start to lead on to the rest of the film and how it relates to the title.

When and how is the setting and location revealed to the viewer?

The setting and location is not shown or revealed in the beginning of the opening sequence of this film as it only shows close ups and mid shots and doesn’t really set a scene or a location. This is a good element of a thriller film as it makes the audience want to watch on a find out many questions they are thinking of, this is because by not showing clues of the plot it is a mystery that the audience want to find out. Also by using these close-ups it shows very detailed shots of characters or even main parts on a character that might relate to a scene in the film, close ups are very effective to show detail on characters or locations.

What costumes and props were used?

The costumes were very plain but very old fashioned and formal, which suggests to the audience that the film is an old fashioned film and it is not set for a young target audience. The props that were used were some extras of people acting in the background. The costumes set a mise en scene of the film as it shows that the situation that the woman is in as every one drives past with no care, this is effective as you feel for the woman and you just want someone to help her, and to find out what had happend to her.

What camera shots and editing were used in the opening?

The camera shots were very basic and straight to the point as it showed main aspects of a thriller opening with a ambiguity. To do this they used such camera shots as close up, of the woman’s face breathing dramatically which was composed very well as it made her seem out of breath and in need for help by the use of levels as well. Also a mid shot, and track shot were used at the beginning to introduce the titles and to give the opening more of a length and suspense.
The editing in the opening were just quick cuts transitions of the titles at the beginning showing who stars in it with a scroll effect coming down the screen this is again is effective as it makes the opening sequence longer and keeps audience in suspense because it doesn’t give obvious mise en scene.

The editing were just quick snappy cuts and with the titles at the beginning showing who stars in it with a scroll effect coming down the screen.

What titles and font styles were used?

The font style used were all the same as they were bold big white letters and very mysterious and were used in a good place of the film as the tracking shot is following the two shot of the people in the car. As the title is very vague audience want to find out why it is called that and find out what it has to do with the film. also the title of the film is different as the speech marks are on the wrong side of the title and it is back to front. Which gives mystery to the film.

How does it set the story up for the film in the opening?

The story is set up by a dilemma and a woman is breathing deeply and dramatically which keeps the audience thinking in dispense. Also the clothing sets up the story as the clothing is a big give away to what the film is going to be set out like. For instance the old clothing gives a basic sense of the reason for the girl breathing in panic as the mise en scene is old fashioned it will not be like a 2011 event but a general event that would happen in 2011.

Brick Anlysis

Brick (film title)

Director (Rain Johnson)

Genre (thriller)

Made in (2005)

Opening sequence

The title of the film when and how does it appear on the screen?

The title of the film is called brick and the title is shown very sharply after it gets the viewers thinking what had has happened, what took place here and then the film name “brick” keeps audience thinking and why would the film be called that blunt word.

When and how is the setting and location revealed to the viewer?

The first scene that is shown is a girl dead on the floor near a flood barricade with a boy watching her. It shows mysterious scenery and straight away shows that the film is a thriller. The setting is shown as a cliffhanger so the audience don’t know esacally was they are and what has happened. Also the first scene is a contrast with the next one as in the first one it gives main hints at what the person looks like and what she was wearing and in the second scene it shows the same features of the person but in a school environment.

What costumes and props were used?

The costumes that were used were people dressed in young teenage clothes maybe secondary school. They are used well as it gives some background to whom these people are. The prop of the bracelets was a very good prop as it is a clue to an audience.

What camera shots and editing were used in the opening?

The main shots used at the start of the opening were the close ups on certain parts of the dead girls body, first of all it hints at what the boy is looking at her/body. Also there main clues to introduce the main characters. The editing were all fades and quick cuts to each clips.

What titles and font styles were used?

Some of the titles at the start were such things as “focus featured”. The text was big and bold but a text that you would find engraved on a brick. The just faded in or out.

How does it set the story up for the film in the opening?

It starts by a character being dead on the floor and it keeps audience thinking, who and what hapend to her, and wear had she been that night. It reverses the film by putting the conclusion of the film at the beginning of it and reverses it back to the beginning. This is a good effect as it grabs the audience’s attention straight away.

How does the opening suggest it’s a thriller?

It suggests that it is a thriller as it is first of all set in a gloomy place a mysterious place and doest give much clues to where about they are.

How are the main characters introduced?

The main characters are introduces in the first scene with one dead. Then you want to find out more about them which is a good aspect of this thriller as you want to watch on.

Sixth Sense title sequence

Cinematography

The opening sequence of this film is very effective as it has a long opening so it thinks about keeping the audience entertained for at least two hours . Also all the pictures that are shown within the opening use the rule of thirds and the golden rule, to construct the picture within the shots. Also at the start of the film all the shots might use the rule of thirds but also they got a hint of a tilt hot which gives a sense of wariness and make the audience think something is going to happen.

Editing

The editing within this opening sequence is a lot of titles and fading transition effects going on. Lastly the music is very subtle and calm which gives of sense a storyline to the film. The effect of having these slow transitions is so the audience can take in the titles as they are related with the film of the genres thriller. Also it builds up mixed feelings in the audience watching and they don’t understand the story line or the plot till the middle of the film.

sound

It uses a very high pitch note repeating the same few notes over and over. This gives a sense of repetition, it also creates suspense and builds tension and allows the audience understand the setting of the film and what genre the film is as the sound is an effective element to film openings and grab audiences attention straight away .

Mise en scene

The overall mise en scene was effective as it grabs the audience as soon as it starts by collaborating all elements like sound editing and various shots so create that effect of ambiguity of the thriller. Also what was effective of the over all shot was it only gave you hints of the setting and location of the film as most shots were mid shots which it only shows top half of the body or they were close ups, by doing this gives the viewers a question to figure out so they carry on watching to find out.

Trailer-6th Sense

Cinematography:
At the start of this trailer it uses an establishing shot which shows the audience the scenery of which the film will be set in. This is good to start off with shot like this as it can give the audience a clue of how the film will play out.
Furthermore as the trailer continues the shots start to cut rapidly to some of the main events in the film. By doing this it holds the audiences attention and keeps them on the edge of their seat through out the film.
Finally near the end of the trailer the shots speed up so that the audience cant keep track of what's going on but sees shots of action scenes within the film.
One main factor of the camera shots is camera time, and at the start it shows three main characters, one having the most camera time and two others with about the same. By doing this it distinguishes who the main characters are and who will be the main parts in the film.

Editing:
One of the clips that i saw is as each clip changed it had a flash transition on, with a non diagetic camera sound, which is very effective as it shows to the audience that the trailer is building up to a climax.

Sound:
The heartbeat used is a non diagetic sound and is spread out in time with short bursts of the trailer, the effect of this is that the heartbeat gets faster, so does the clips and the audiences anticipation increases and they want to find out what is going to happen.
At the end of the trailer and also throughout it there is a low sustained note that helps build and create tension, this is very effective as it has the audience wondering what is going to happen in the film.

Memento Anlysis

The meaning of memento is a physical reminder of an objective, thing or place.

Director- Christopher Nolan

Memento (2002)

Opening sequence

The title of the film when and how does it appear on the screen?

The title of memento appears a bit in at the start of the opening, it uses a transition effect from gradually fading from a dark blue to a elegant light blue. Furthermore the title of the film overlaps a back scenery clip of a person’s hand, and as shown at the start it shows the audience it could be a main character. The title gives the film a high attention grabber to the audience as the title is shows a lot and is in a lot of the camera time at the beginning.

When and how is the setting and location revealed to the viewer?

The setting is not shown within the opening sequence but gives a mise-en-scene of suspense and confusion to the audience and in a sense of keeping the audience entertained it does and creates a dilemma and mystery so they watch on for the whole film. By not showing a obvious clue of were the opening is set they use lots of close-ups to show detail but know scenery detail.

What costumes and props were used?

There are a number of props used; firstly there are a lot of pictures used. This becomes the main prop throughout the film. There is also a camera used as a prop which also becomes a main prop throughout the film. The costumes are very smart, they all wear suits that show that they are middle class rather than lower class.

What camera shots and editing were used in the opening?

In the opening of the film they use a lot of close up shots, this is so that it doesn’t give too much of the film away. This is also done so that they don’t give too much of the setting away. To also keep the film still a bit of a mystery ambiguous shots are used, so that not too much is given away. In these shots not a lot of scenery is shown , and mainly close up shots of main characters and main scenes are shown.

What titles and font styles were used?

The titles that were used where subtitles of who acted in the film the directors and all roles of jobs. A main title was the title of the film “memento” which fades in and out of the clip.

How does it set the story up for the film in the opening?

The opening of the film sets up for the rest of the film by leaving lots of cliff hangers, this intrigues the audience and makes them want to watch the rest of the film to find out what happens. It also uses props that mean nothing to the audience at the moment and this again makes them intrigued to watch on to find out what the mean and their significance in the film. Finally it doesn’t introduce any of the main characters or main storylines, this means that the audience is left completely in the dark and the only way to find out more information is for them to watch the rest of the film.

How does the opening suggest it’s a thriller?

Because of the suspense at the beginning of the film and the long title sequence it gives a sense of mystery. It leaves the audience trying to come up with lots of theories of what happened and grabs their attention right at the beginning so they will have to watch on.

How are the main characters introduced?

The main characters are introduced in various ways the first one is introduced right at the start were he hold up a picture of somebody that is dead, which we don’t know yet but is also a main character. So straite away it sends questions through their head thinking what happened ect. Also it stats the film backwards with the ending/beginning at the start of the film.

Is there any special effects?

The rewind of the film at the beginning of the film good effect to the audience as it attracts their attention.

Brief For Task

Within media we were asked to create the titles and opening of a new fiction/thriller film. the opening is to last at least 2 miniute and has to apply all media concepts of opening sequences also to apply your reasearch on your bolg about tthriller trailer's and uses the same sort of layout in the one you create.
