Conventions of a opening sequence

conventions Film Opening:
Has got to hook the audience, for them to want to watch it until the end

Familiarizes the viewer with setting, uses establishing shot to open up the first scene in the opening.
Slower paced than the trailer as it wants to keep the suspense and not reveal the main plot of the film. so by going at a slower pace it grasps the audience attention and they want to watch on to see the action that they sore in the trailer.
Uses narrative- in some cases this is good if it is a very ambiguous story line narrative helps the audience understand what's going on.
Titles, they are effective at the beginning of an opening as it lengths the opening and certain titles relate to the thriller genera or film.

Establish a certain mood or tone, to the film, because by creating a atmosphere it grasps the audiences attention and draws them into watching the whole film.

has to have a sound track, if the sound track relates to the genera thriller it pays of as they are very effective in making an atmosphere and also to length the film to leave audience in suspense.

Viewers need to feel curious/engaged and have questions they want answered to view more.

Conventions of my Chosen Genre

  • Simple font titles in opening which short and animated titles, this is effective as animated titles you can make as effective as you want and they can sometimes make the audience get ready for the film as some titles are quite scary and ambiguous.

Thriller

  • Creepy, mysterious and ambiguous locations and scenes. this is used a lot in thrillers as they do not give away a lot till the end and like to keep the audience in suspense waiting and carry on watching to find out.

  • Quick cuts and not so many slow effects between shots. the quick cuts are used along side the music and quick cuts and music create action in the film which make the audience have a reaction to it. which again is a good element of a thriller as it makes them want to carry on watching.

  • Dark areas blunt lighting colours used. Used all the time as locations and people are not given away straight away and main characters are hidden until the end or a point or scene of climax.

  • Lots of facial close ups and body close ups.normality a number 2 of the film so always leaves you at a cliff hanger. it show the tension of what may be going on in the film.
  • Steady music leading up to point of action of a tense moment to reveal a dilemma or a situation in the film. this can also be effective in the film as a a high point of tension the music can rise and dramatically go loud so make the audience have a reaction to what is going on.
